Origin of the Margarita

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO

In celebration of Cinco De Mayo, let’s dive into all things margaritas! A margarita is an absolute favorite here at Unbooze. Sometimes we wonder, where and when the margarita was created. I decided to dive in and do some research for our team (and every other margarita lover out there) to find out where this beloved drink originated.

  • One story suggests that the Margarita was created in the late 1930s or early 1940s by a bartender named Carlos "Danny" Herrera at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, located between Tijuana and Rosarito, Mexico. The story goes that Herrera invented the drink for a customer who was allergic to all hard liquor except tequila, but found it too harsh. To make it more palatable, Herrera combined tequila with lime juice and a touch of triple sec, serving it in a salt-rimmed glass, and named it after a frequent patron, Margarita Henkel.

  • Another story attributes the creation of the Margarita to a wealthy socialite named Margarita Sames. As the story goes, during a house party in Acapulco in 1948, Sames mixed tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice to create a new cocktail. Her concoction gained popularity among her friends and eventually became known as the Margarita.

  • Some historians believe that the Margarita evolved from another popular cocktail called the Daisy, which was made with brandy or whiskey, citrus juice, and grenadine. During Prohibition in the United States, many Americans visited Mexico where they were introduced to tequila.
